No One Cares: Logging Off and Coming Back
For anyone crafting a social media goodbye... maybe don’t.
This is the first in a new series I’m calling No One Cares. Each one looks at the things we think matter to everyone else, when in reality, no one’s paying that much attention. The gift of realizing that? You get to stop performing for the crowd and start focusing on what actually matters.
Something that drives me a little nuts is the social media “log off” or the grand “I’m back” post.
“I’m going quiet for a bit. If you need me, email or text.”
OR
“I’m back! Took a break. Felt amazing. Ready to reconnect.”
I get the impulse. Sometimes it is about reassuring people you are ok. Sometimes it is about drawing a boundary. But honestly, it is ok to just go. If someone is really worried, they will find you.
And the triumphant return? I roll my eyes and want to comment, “Didn’t even know you were gone.”
Because honestly, people don’t care.
But they will care if you come back with meaning. Something you learned. Something that shifts the lens a little.
So yes, take the break. Say nothing. Come back quietly. Or come back loudly, but have something to say beyond, “I’m back.”
Otherwise, everyone was too busy scrolling to notice.
